3D printed model of the BEAST

Theses are the photos of my printed model. As you can see most of his fingers in his hands are missing due to fragile condition of material which it been made out of. If I were to print out the model in larger scale it would have definitely hold the leaner fingers in place plus the features in the face would have been more clearer and detailed.

THE BEAST

This is the final model of my character, it has been a tough challenge to model. since this was my first time modeling. I have kept the model quite tight with the blueprint. It seemed to come out quite smoothly. If i were to improved the model further i could have add in hair particle which you can see clearly on the blueprint on the character's head on the sides and on the bottom of his jaw area. If  I were to model them i would making  triangle shapes from a plane mesh and combine and merge the vertex of the triangular mesh in the character head where the hair particles are been placed.

DEVELOPMENT OF MY CHARACTER

This my initial blueprint of the character. As you can see the character looks very muscular, as it should be. Also you can notice that there are identical features that have been included in this blue print such as the short legs and long arms. I have exaggerated the shoulders and the chest area. however  I decided to work on another blue print simply because it looked more human rather than a ape (in my opinion).

Well this my second attempt, as you can see i have enlarged the hands. But this was no success. It just didn't look right, but the chest the lower body and the legs looked quite convincing of a real beast, not overly exaggerated muscular body but more closer to the real thing.

This is my final blue print, i have recreated the arms but rest is from my second blue print. The reason i liked because it fits the brief quite nicely, plus it look like a regular gorilla. However there are some minor modification on the hands and on the feet.
This is the side view of the final gorilla.
When i was working on the gorillas body I just did a ruff sketch of a upper body of a human, just for the comparison.

This an image from the Disney - Tarzan, the head blue print of the alpha male gorilla. When I saw this I knew I had to model this. It had captured the essence  of the gorillas face which I really wanted that's why I used this as reference for my model. It saved some time for me not to create face blueprint from the scratch, how ever it was a hell of a thing to model.

MORE RESEARCH AND CONCEPT DRAWINGS

These drawings were been done when I was watching "King-Kong" the film by Peter Jackson. I actually watched the film for the 4th time for the sake of project, and I enjoyed the film the way I enjoy it the first time.  I also began to notice thing that I didn't noticed the first time when i watch the film. For example the camera angles and the closeup shots of the gorilla look very dramatic. specially the closeup shot of his eyes on one of the scene  looked very artistic and the way the eyes are communicating with the audience and leading up to the next scene was a great camera trick.

These are some more quick skeches of the beast in action.

This was a one-off picture which i drew from my imagination, i thought the perspective of the picture looks interesting and also the abstract stokes of the model looks very cartoony.

This character here is from the book called (Character Design- by- Chris Patmore)  I went through theses books to get some ideas and inspiration to create my character. when i was flicking through theses book i saw so many different and interesting characters. However this character seemed to strike me the most from the rest.  I liked the look of this creature, it was ecstatically pleasing for me. In some ways I think he looks like Tarzan from the Disney because of his thin curved body shape.

Well going through this book thought me a great deal of how to create a character from what you have been given and how to research far in to the characters personality.

Theses two pages from above are from a book called (Force -by- Michale D. Mattesi). Just take a look at the gorilla with the boxing gloves, quite a creative way of thinking about a character. And it looks like he is going to snap at any moment. The pose of the drawing looks very animated because of the way the curved strokes are being created by the back ink.

RESEARCH

This sculpture is made out of "hangers", which was quite unusual to see. The reason I posted this picture is because the way the artist have used the media efficiently to create the sculpture. For example the hooks from the hangers creates an illusion of hair been texture on to the model. The most striking thing about this sculpture is that is been model as an authentic gorilla, however the "media" which it's been created makes it somewhat abstract.

side view of a silver back.

front view of a silver back, this is a typical dominant pose of a male gorilla.

in comparison to a human anatomy, the differences are quite clear. The shape of the skull is quite elongated and bulky. The ribcage is twice the size of ours. The pelvis area is quite lowdown, and the arms and the legs are very much a contrast to ours.

(Secondary research)- Theses research and drawings are from the courtesy of Disney Tarzan- animated movie. They really shows the complex anatomy of the gorilla in few scribbles on a paper.....fascinating stuff.

These are some of the poses captured by the artist's close observation of the personality, expressions and body-language of an actual gorilla.

This is more focusing on facial details and expressions. The model we looking here is the female character. The artist who created this characters has givens very distinctive features to it's character to appear more feminine, especially the bold eyes with the typical eyelids and very shallow eyebrows.

body feature- hands and feet of a gorilla. They also have quite distinctive features, the palms are very elongated covering 2/3rds of the hand where as the finger seems to shrunk in comparison to ours. These features there to help them to cope with the environment that they live in and it makes it easy to adapt to there surrounding.

Tarzan the main character from the film was a very interesting characters. Simply because the artist who created him the legendary Glen Keane, wanted his character to behave more ape rather than a human, is like creating a character with two personalities merge to one. Although i know that this character has nothing to do with what i am actually creating, I thought it will be quite interesting to post some of his studies of the character.  enjoy!!!!

INDUSTRY EXERCISE

Well to begging with I think this project is going to be quite challenging but an exciting one. On the brief they gave us 5 different characters to model from. so i went for the last one form the list, Cornelius - A middle age silver back gorilla. When I thought of the character first thing came on to my mind was  Peter Jackson's 2005 film (King-Kong). However I decided that my character should look more balanced, what I meant by this is that it shouldn't be too cartoony nor realistic, and so this is where my research begins.
